Paint by Numbers for Father's Day: Start With the Photo of Him You Already Have

According to the National Retail Federation's Father's Day survey, the second most common gift for dad is clothing, and nearly half of shoppers say what they really want is something different. The gap between those two facts is where this guide lives.

A paint by numbers kit for Father's Day works best when it starts from a photo — because the people buying it are usually his kids, and his kids have the pictures.

The Photo You Already Have

Three photos exist in almost every family, and each one becomes a different canvas.

The truck, the boat, the bike. Taken from the side in daylight, the thing he's proudest of converts into a clean numbered design with big panels and clear edges. Easy to paint, instantly recognizable.

The one with the fish, or the dog. Him holding something at arm's length — a fish, a puppy, a trophy — with his face clearly lit. Faces are where a custom canvas earns its detail, so pick a photo where his is sharp and not in shadow under a cap.

The kids on his shoulders. The family photo from the beach or the backyard. Two or three faces in good light convert well; a group of eight at a dim table does not. If the only photo is the group one, crop it to him and the nearest child.

A custom paint by numbers kit takes any of these. The canvas runs from 16x20 in (40x50 cm) to 28x40 in (70x100 cm), in 24, 36 or 48 colors — 24 for a man who hasn't painted before, 48 for the one who'll want the full detail of a face.

If There's No Photo, Paint What He Does

A ready-made design that matches his weekends: Bald Eagle over snowy mountains for the one who hikes or hunts; Highland Cows or a national-park scene for the one who'd rather look at the outdoors than walk it; a classic car from the Cars collection for the one with a garage; a sailboat or lighthouse for the one with a boat or the wish for one; a golf course for Sunday mornings.

For the kits that get past "I'm not artistic," the longer guide is paint by numbers gifts for men who say they're not artistic. This one is about the day itself.

From the Kids — They Paint It, He Hangs It

The Father's Day gift a child makes is the one that ends up in his office. A design from the kids paint by numbers collection — big shapes, few colors, an animal or a car — gives a child a real painting to give him instead of a card. The child paints it in the weeks before, with help on the small sections, and he gets a canvas with their brushstrokes in it.

Older kids can take a 24-color adult design; the result looks like art on his wall, not a craft project.

When Father's Day Is in 2027

United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Ireland: Sunday, June 20, 2027.

Australia and New Zealand: Sunday, September 5, 2027 — the first Sunday of September, not June.

Ready-made kits ship from stock. A custom kit is made from your photo first, so order in May for the June date and in August for the September date.

What Arrives

Every kit includes the numbered canvas, acrylic paints matched to the design and brushes. Ready-made designs are 16x20 in (40x50 cm) in a 24-color or 36-color version, rolled or pre-stretched on a frame. Other recipients, from partners to grandparents, are in the gift guide sorted by recipient.

He'll say it's going in the garage. It will end up in the living room.
