Paint by Numbers for Mother's Day: The Right Kit by Who's Giving It, and the 2027 Dates

Three out of four people give flowers for Mother's Day, according to the National Retail Federation's annual survey — and the same survey says what people actually want from the gift is for it to be different and to leave a memory. Flowers are gone in a week. A canvas of flowers she painted herself is on the wall for years, and she remembers which week she painted it.

This guide is sorted by who's giving, because that changes what to buy: a partner knows what she'd paint, grown children know what she'd never buy herself, and small children can give the one version of this gift that no store sells — one they painted.

From a Partner

You know whether she has painted before. If she hasn't, a floral or a calm scene in 24 colors: Wildflower Meadow, Blue Vase with Daisies, or a Monet water-lily design if she likes the museum version. Large shapes, a quick finish, and a result she'll want to hang.

If she already paints, give her the one she wouldn't buy for herself — the 36-color version of something detailed, or the largest custom canvas from a photo only the two of you would choose. A woman you're buying for has a longer guide in paint by numbers gifts matched to what she loves; this one covers the Mother's Day specifics.

From Grown Children

This is where the custom kit belongs. A custom paint by numbers kit from a photo turns one picture into a numbered canvas she paints: the grandchildren at last summer's table, the house she raised you in, her own mother. The photo needs to be sharp and well lit with the subject filling the frame — a phone photo is fine, a distant group shot in the shade is not.

Two practical points. A custom kit is made from the photo you send, so order it with time in hand rather than the week before. And if the photo is of her dog or cat, Paint Your Pet is built for exactly that and gives the animal's face the detail it needs.

From Little Kids — They Paint It for Her

The classic Mother's Day gift is something the child made. A paint by numbers kit lets a six-year-old make a real painting instead of a macaroni frame: pick a design from the Kids collection — animals, simple shapes, big areas — and the child paints it in the weeks before, with help on the small sections. She gets a finished canvas with the child's own brushstrokes in it.

For older kids, a 24-color adult design works the same way and looks like a painting on the wall rather than a craft project.

For a Grandmother

Calm subjects, larger shapes, 24 colors. The Seniors collection is sorted for exactly this — lakeside cottages, gardens, still lifes — and a pre-stretched canvas means she can hang it the day it's done, without a trip to a framer. If her hands are less steady than they were, the broad areas of a landscape are kinder than the fine edges of a portrait.

When Mother's Day Is in 2027

The date depends on the country, and so does your ordering window.

United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand: Sunday, May 9, 2027.

United Kingdom and Ireland (Mothering Sunday): Sunday, March 7, 2027 — three weeks before Easter, so it moves every year.

Ready-made kits ship from stock. A custom kit is made from your photo first, so for the March date order in February, and for the May date order in April.

What's in the Box

Every kit includes the numbered canvas, acrylic paints matched to the design and brushes. Ready-made designs are 16x20 in (40x50 cm) in a 24-color or 36-color version; custom canvases run from 16x20 in up to 28x40 in (70x100 cm) in 24, 36 or 48 colors, rolled or pre-stretched on a frame. Other recipients, from partners to grandparents, are in the gift guide sorted by recipient.

She'll say you shouldn't have. Then she'll ask where the frame should go.
