Monet Antibes Seen from La Salis

That tree is the reason to buy this one. Monet painted it in 1888 from the Salis gardens, a single olive twisting up the right side of the canvas in orange and rust, framing the pale town of Antibes and the medieval Château Grimaldi tower across turquoise water.

He built the whole thing from tiny stippled dabs — the foliage especially — so the work is spread across the canvas as a mosaic of small flecks rather than large fields. The sea and hazy sky give you steadier stretches between the busy passages.

Where the palette earns 36 colors is the split personality of it: warm orange leaves against cool blue Mediterranean light, with a lot of intermediate tones bridging the two. At 24 those transitions collapse and the shimmer flattens. We recommend the 36-color version for this design.
