It's also a gentler painting than most autumn scenes. The background is deliberately soft: pale cream sky, distant trees fading into mist, nothing sharp to chase. Those areas take up a third of the canvas and go down calmly.

The leaves are the real work. Two full canopies overhead and a carpet of fallen leaves underfoot, all built from small overlapping shapes in orange, gold and rust. It's repetitive in the way people mean when they say painting clears their head.

The figures themselves are small and simple — a rust coat, a gray jacket, two heads of white hair.

The 24-color set would keep the palette warm and simplify the canopies into bolder blocks. This design needs the fuller range. Everything in it is atmospheric: the trees behind dissolve into pale washes, the leaf canopy layers light gold over deep rust to give it depth, and the ground carpet does the same in reverse. Without those intermediate steps the leaves flatten into a single orange mass and the mist disappears.
