The elephant himself is drawn in large simple areas — a rounded body, two big ears, four feet with pale toenails. The fine work is limited to his eyes and the warm coral inside the ears.

Thirty-six colors would let the gray body and the misty background grade more gradually. The design doesn't call for it. The whole illustration works from a soft, narrow palette — gray-blue, cream, coral, muted green, ochre and orange — with broad gentle transitions rather than many close values.
