Warm light floods in through three tall arched windows and everything in the room takes its color from it — the floor, the walls, even the black dinner jackets.

Three gowns fill the lower half: blue turning to green, deep pink into rose, orange into gold. Each skirt is a spread of angled strokes rather than smooth fabric, and each one shifts through six or seven tones from waist to hem. That's the bulk of the canvas and the bulk of the work.

The dancers are seen from behind. No faces to get right on the women, which removes the hardest part of any figure painting.

Below them, the polished floor repeats every skirt as a blurred reflection. Broad, loose shapes, and a satisfying stretch after the fabric.

36 is what those gowns need — the color has to travel across each skirt or the fabric goes flat. 24 turns them into bolder wedges of pink, blue and orange, which is a striking look in its own right and a much shorter project.

The number is how many different colors the design is printed in. The 24-color version uses broader areas of solid color, so it goes faster and the finished painting looks bolder and more graphic. The 36-color version splits those same areas into finer steps, which gives softer shading and more depth, and takes longer to complete. Both use the same design and the same canvas size.

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
