Close enough to see the veins in the wings.

The flower fills nearly the whole canvas, and every petal turns from deep red at its base to bright yellow at the tip. That turning is what you're painting. Get the order right and the petal curves; get it wrong and it goes flat.

The bee is the slow section. Fine fur along the thorax, black bands on the body, and two transparent wings with thin ribs running through them. Small shapes, close together, worth doing last when your hand is warmed up.

The dark blue background is your rest. Broad, deep, quick to fill, and it's what makes the orange look as hot as it does.

This kit comes in two versions, and the number tells you how many pots of paint are in the box. The 36-color version has thirty-six, which is what this design wants, because the petals shift gradually and need those in-between tones to look rounded. The 24-color version has twelve fewer, so each petal reads as a couple of bolder blocks of orange instead of a smooth turn. Fewer pots also means fewer numbered areas on the canvas and a shorter project.

24 or 36 colors — which version?

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
