The animal is realistic — you can read the breed in the ear tufts and the long ruff — but the palette is invented, and the two working together are what make the piece hold a wall. It's a cat portrait for someone who doesn't want a sentimental cat portrait.

The fur is painted in long directional knife strokes that run outward from the face and dissolve into the background at the edges. No outline anywhere, no clear boundary between animal and air.

That's the work. Long strokes of cobalt, lilac, ice white and near-black, laid side by side, and the face emerging where they tighten.

The 24-color version pushes the contrast and reads as a bolder graphic cat. This numbered canvas is built for 36: nearly every stroke here differs from its neighbor by a small step — sky blue into periwinkle into violet into indigo — and that gradation is what turns flat strokes into fur. We recommend the 36-color version for this design.
