Boxer owners will recognize the expression before they register the color.

That's what sells this one. It's a portrait first and a graphic second, and the face is drawn accurately enough that someone who has lived with the breed will see their own dog in it — which makes it an easy gift when you know somebody's dog.

The painting is all hard shapes. His coat is built from flat planes of fawn, rust, blue-gray and violet laid side by side, and the background is a stepped block pattern in orange, lime, cyan and magenta that goes down quickly in large areas.

That background is worth mentioning for a second reason: it's forgiving. If you're painting your first kit or coming back after a long gap, half this canvas is straightforward and the other half is the interesting part.

The eyes are small and they carry the whole picture. Do them when you're fresh.

Thirty-six colors would add finer steps through his coat and let the background blocks shade into one another. This design doesn't work that way. Every shape is a solid flat field with a hard border, the whole style depends on those blocks staying separate and saturated, and 24 gives you the full range the artwork actually uses — fawn through rust, white to blue-gray in the muzzle, and the six background hues at full strength.
