Breaking Wave

Warm above, cold below. The sky burns orange and red while the water stays deep blue and green, and the whole canvas lives on that split.

The big wave on the right is the centerpiece. Its face curves from near-black at the base up through teal to a band of yellow where the low sun shines through the water, then breaks into white foam at the crest. That curve is what you're really painting.

Foam is the slow part. Hundreds of small rounded shapes along every breaking edge, pale blue and white against dark water, and they need doing carefully or the wave loses its motion.

The sky above goes down faster. Long streaks of orange and pink, rows of small clouds, and a pale sun sitting just above the horizon.

The number in the version name is how many pots of paint are in the box. Thirty-six is right for this design, because the wave face turns gradually from dark to light and that turn needs the in-between shades to look like water rather than glass. The 24-color version has twelve fewer, which gives the wave harder, more graphic bands of color and a punchier sky, and it takes less time to finish.

24 or 36 colors — which version?

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
