Cactus Bloom

The yellow center of the largest pink bloom is only a few strokes wide, and it's the thing your eye lands on first every time you look at the canvas.

Foreground first: prickly pear pads, pink and orange flowers, loose rocks. Then the desert opens up behind them — a dirt track, saguaro cactus standing along it, blue mountains far back under a sky full of cumulus.

The near flowers carry real shading, petal over petal, and the clouds move through several tones of white and gray. That's where the 36-color version earns its place. The 24-color version simplifies those transitions and gives you crisper, more graphic petals and a flatter sky, which some painters prefer and which finishes noticeably sooner.

This is a long paint by numbers project. Expect several sittings, mostly because of how many separate small shapes fill the lower half.

Southwest color without being a desert cliché — it works in a sunroom, a kitchen, or any wall that could use more warmth.
