Three sections, three completely different jobs.

The sky is broad and expressive — thick ribbons of magenta, orange and blue laid across each other in wide strokes. It goes down fast and it's the most enjoyable part.

The houses are the long haul. Nine or ten narrow facades, each with its own brick color, its own gable shape and four floors of lit windows. Small numbered blocks by the hundred, and the section you work through over several evenings.

The water underneath repeats the whole row as broken horizontal marks. Slower than the sky, faster than the houses, and it's what finishes the picture.

Painted with 24 colors this becomes a bolder, poster-like version of the same view. That trade doesn't suit it. The design is impressionist in construction — every surface built from adjacent strokes in slightly different tones, from the brickwork to the clouds to the ripples — and it carries more separate hues than almost anything else in the catalog. Thirty-six is what lets the reflections read as water rather than stripes.

24 or 36 colors — which version?

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
