The caldera is the reason this scene works. That expanse of blue behind the white walls is what makes the chapel look as though it's perched at the edge of everything — and painting a large area of water in graded blues is more satisfying than it sounds.

Terracotta pots of red geraniums sit at the bottom of the frame, pink bougainvillea spills in from the left, and the terracotta bell tower gives the whole composition its warm counterweight.

The 24-color version renders it in cleaner, bolder blocks and suits a painter who wants strong contrast. The 36-color set is the better match for this canvas: the sea deepens steadily toward the horizon and the whitewashed walls carry several close tones of shadow, both of which need the finer steps. We recommend the 36-color version for this design.
