A silver king stands over a fallen red one, and behind them the rest of the pieces wait in shadow. It's a subject with an obvious home — a study, an office, a games room, anywhere a bit of quiet drama on the wall suits the room.

Painting it is more restful than it looks. The board runs diagonally away from you in large alternating squares, and once you have the perspective started, whole sections go down in steady repetition. The pieces themselves are turned shapes: rings, collars and bases stacked in bands, each one a clean numbered area.

Keep the red king for last. Everything else is monochrome, so those few strokes of red are the payoff.

The 36-color version would spread the metallic mottling on the silver into finer steps. It isn't necessary here. This design works from a deliberately restricted palette — black, white, a run of grays and one red — and 24 covers all of it with room to spare: the polished highlights on the king, the shadowed pieces at the back, the speckled stone of the board and the reflections in the red lacquer. A smaller set also means fewer near-identical grays to sort through on a canvas where most of the surface is gray.
