For anyone who has owned a black cat, this is an easy canvas to want — they're notoriously hard to photograph well, and a painting gets the character across in a way a phone camera never does.

The painting divides into two very different jobs. The cat is broad and forgiving: large dark areas, fur worked as long directional strokes, and a warm cream background that goes down quickly. The crown is the opposite — peonies, daisies, coral gerberas and dozens of fine blue sprigs and stems, each one its own small shape.

Do the background and the body first. By the time you reach the flowers you'll have your rhythm, and that's the part worth taking slowly.

The 36-color set opens up the florals further, giving the pinks and blues more intermediate steps. What suits this design better is the 24-color set: the illustration is flat and graphic by nature, the flowers are drawn as clean shapes with hard outlines rather than blended petals, and the impact comes from that black silhouette against a plain cream ground with the amber eyes cutting through. A tighter palette keeps that contrast exactly as sharp as the artwork intends.
