The desert gets about two weeks a year looking like this, and the painting catches it at exactly that moment.

Saguaros stand along a sand track, prickly pear crowds the foreground, and every cactus is putting out flowers in coral, magenta and marigold. Behind it all, layered blue ridges under a turquoise sky.

The warm-cool split is what makes it hang so well. Orange desert floor against blue distance, with the flowers pushing the contrast further. Good in a room with terracotta or natural wood, and it brings heat to a north-facing wall.

There's plenty to work through. The foreground blooms alone will take several sessions, each petal its own clean shape with a hard edge and nothing to blend.
