Monet's The Cliff, Étretat, Sunset, painted in 1883 on the Normandy coast — the only one of his roughly fifty Étretat paintings to show the sun itself.

The dark cliff and the Porte d'Aval arch sit in silhouette against a pink evening sky, the sun glowing low near the Aiguille spire. Below, orange light pours across the water and fishing boats read as small dark shapes riding the swell.

The pull here is the light: warm sunset color against the deep blue-black cliff, a calmer, more atmospheric Monet than his lily ponds.

Moderately involved work. The cliff is a large darker mass to build first; the rippling reflected light and the scattered boats are where the detail lives. Fewer tiny shapes overall than his denser canvases.

The warm-and-cool contrast reads dramatic — a strong fit for a living room, study, or a coastal-themed room.
