Cubist portraiture is a specific taste and the people who have it usually know exactly where the piece is going — a white wall, a modern room, somewhere with nothing else competing.

For the painter it's the most straightforward canvas on the site to execute well. Every shape is a solid geometric field with a hard border. Nothing blends, nothing feathers, nothing needs a steady hand. You fill a triangle, then a wedge, then a curve, and the faces assemble themselves.

That makes it a genuinely good first project for someone intimidated by fur or water, while still producing something that looks difficult when it's framed.

The eyes and the red mouths are the only small work in the whole design.

A 36-color set would open room for shading inside the planes. That would undo the style. Cubist work depends on each field staying one flat unbroken color with a hard line against the next, and the palette here is broad but finite — reds, oranges, ochres, several blues, teal, pinks, creams and neutrals. Twenty-four holds all of them at full strength and keeps the geometry crisp, which is the whole design.
