German Shepherd

Chin on the floor, eyes up. Every shepherd owner has been looked at like this.

The breed portrait is the draw. It's specific enough that it only appeals to a certain buyer, and that buyer usually wants it badly — for their own hallway, or as a gift for someone whose dog is the center of the household.

What makes it a good canvas rather than just a good photograph is the fur. It's rendered in directional strokes throughout: long lit strands on the ear edges, dense dark ruff around the muzzle, tan mask around the eyes, and short fur across the paws. Hundreds of small shapes that build into a coat when you step back.

The background helps. Loose brushwork in warm brown and ochre, no detail to chase, and enough of it to give you an easy start before the head demands attention.

Wood grain along the bottom edge does the same job at the other end.

There's a version of this design at 24 colors that reads bolder, with the coat simplified into stronger blocks of tan and black. It isn't this one. Shepherd coloring is built on transition — cream to gold to rust to sable, often within a single inch of fur — and the face depends on it, from the amber eyes to the graded gray across the nose. The looser background is graded the same way.

We recommend the 36-color version for this design.

24 or 36 colors — which version?

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
