Monet Houses of Parliament

Monet's Houses of Parliament series, painted from a terrace at St Thomas' Hospital between 1900 and 1904 — the Palace of Westminster as a deep blue-violet silhouette against a burning orange-and-mauve sunset, its towers doubled in the misty Thames below.

The whole painting is atmosphere. Sky and water share the same fragmented mauve and orange strokes, the Gothic architecture dissolving into fog rather than reading as stone.

Demanding work. There's no flat area — the swirling sky, the silhouetted towers, and the broken reflections are all small strokes of shifting color.

The sunset and fog push this to 36: the sky and water move through many close oranges, mauves, and blues that need the extra steps to hold the haze. 24 would flatten the atmosphere that carries the whole piece. We recommend the 36-color version for this design.
