The path is the spine of the canvas. Hundreds of separate stones in cream, tan and gray running from the bottom edge up into the trees, each one its own small shape.

Firs fill both sides in dark green with yellow-green catching the light along their edges. That contrast between shadow and sun is constant across the whole canvas, which is why 36 suits it. At 24 the greens condense into fewer, bolder blocks and the sun flattens into a plain disc, which speeds the work considerably.

The figures are small and seen from behind. No faces, and the packs give them their only strong color — one blue, one red.

Rocks in the foreground are your fast section. Big angular slabs, few numbers, quick progress.

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
