For a painter it's an unusual project because it's really nine small portraits sharing one canvas. You finish the black one, then the terrier, then the white one with the pink nose, and each is a complete face rather than a section of something bigger. That makes it easy to work in short sessions.

The fence gives you the break. Broad vertical planks in yellow, lime, blue and orange, each one weathered with visible grain, painted in long simple strokes. The sky above is the same — loose blue brushwork with nothing to line up.

The 24-color version would push the palette bolder and simplify each coat into stronger blocks. This design needs 36, mostly because of the dogs themselves. Nine different coats means several browns, a run of grays, black with lifted highlights and white with shadow in it, all in the same painting — plus the pinks in nine open mouths. A tighter set would force different dogs to share the same brown, and half the charm here is that they all look like individuals.
