How much do you trust yourself with a face?

That's the question here, because everything else on this canvas is forgiving. The background is loose blocks of magenta, orange and blue with paint running down in drips, and none of it has to be precise.

The face does. Skin is built from patches of peach, coral, blue and gray sitting next to each other, and it only resolves into a face when the values are in the right places. Eyes and lips are the smallest, most exacting shapes on the canvas.

36 gives you the tonal range that skin needs. At 24 the face turns into harder color blocks — still readable, more graphic, closer to a screen print — and the whole canvas moves faster.

The hair is dark curls with red and blue caught in them. Slow, but pure shape work with no values to judge.

A statement wall in a bedroom or studio. This is one of the few paint by numbers designs here aimed at a younger buyer, and it looks nothing like a craft-store canvas when it's done.

The number is how many different colors the design is printed in. The 24-color version uses broader areas of solid color, so it goes faster and the finished painting looks bolder and more graphic. The 36-color version splits those same areas into finer steps, which gives softer shading and more depth, and takes longer to complete. Both use the same design and the same canvas size.

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
