Pink Desert

Not every desert scene has to be dusty. This one is pink, from the clouds down to the blooms on every cactus in the foreground.

Everything is drawn as flat shape with a hard outline. No shading inside the petals, no sky that fades from one tone to the next. Every area is one solid color, so you fill it and move on.

The work sits in the bottom two thirds. Dozens of blooms, prickly pear pads, small rocks along the path, all with clean edges. Easy to paint, slow to get through.

The sky is where you'll speed up. Wide bands of blue, white and pink, and mountains that go down in a few strokes.

This kit comes in two versions, and the number simply means how many pots of paint you get. The 24-color version gives you twenty-four, which is all this design needs, since it was drawn as flat shapes rather than blended ones. The 36-color version gives you twelve more, splitting the greens and pinks into finer steps so the cactus pads separate more clearly and the clouds gain a little more depth. More pots means more numbers on the canvas and more time at the table.

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
