Red Truck

One color in the entire painting, and it does all the work.

The barn, the windmill, the clouds, the fence line and the road are grayscale. The truck is red. That single decision is why this canvas reads from across a room and why it suits a farmhouse kitchen, a den or a country-style hallway better than a full-color version of the same scene would.

It's also an unusually approachable painting. Most of your time goes into grays — cloud shapes, weathered board siding, roadside grass — and grays are easy to place because the boundaries between them are clear and there's no color matching to think about.

Then you get to the truck, and it goes down fast in bold reds while the rest of the canvas holds still around it.

Both versions work here, and 36 spreads the grays into finer steps through the clouds. But the design is built on a deliberately narrow palette — grayscale everywhere except one vehicle — and 24 covers it comfortably: white through charcoal in the sky and siding, a handful of mid-grays for the fields and road, and a clean run of reds for the truck. Fewer near-identical gray pots also makes it far easier to keep track of which is which while you work.
