Nothing in it demands attention. Two boats, a flat horizon, mountains barely visible in the distance, and a sky mostly given over to cloud. It suits a bedroom, a guest room, a bathroom — rooms where the wall should stay quiet.

Painting it is much the same. The water takes up the lower half and is built from long horizontal bands of turquoise, pale blue and white reflection, laid in one after another. It's rhythmic work, and people who find painting calming tend to name water sections as the reason.

The clouds are the same idea vertically: big rounded masses in white and soft gray that fill quickly. The boat is the only fiddly part, and even then it's a hull, three sails and a few rigging lines.

There's a case for 36 in the water and cloud, where more steps would soften the transitions further. It isn't needed. The whole design lives in one narrow family — blues from turquoise to slate, whites and pale grays, one warm brown for the mast — and 24 covers all of it. That restraint is the reason the piece feels as calm as it does, and a wider set would only give you more near-identical blues to keep straight.
