Van Gogh painted this in June 1888 on the beach at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer — sand is still embedded in the paint. A choppy Mediterranean in blue, green and white, one fishing boat with a white sail catching the wind, two more on the far horizon under a bright cloud-filled sky.
He laid it on with a palette knife, not a brush, so the waves are thick ridges of unmixed color — green and yellow streaked through the blue. That impasto texture is the whole character of the piece.
Demanding work. The foreground surf and the wave pattern are dense with small directional strokes; the sky and the pale horizon band give the only steadier stretches.
The knife-work and the mackerel-blue sea push this to 36: the water runs through many close blues, greens, and whites that need the extra steps to read as moving water. 24 would flatten the waves into blocks. We recommend the 36-color version for this design.
