Starry Castle

The light in this one comes from everywhere at once — a heavy moon at the upper right, seven or eight smaller halos scattered across the sky, and thin yellow windows burning in the castle below.

Almost the entire canvas is blue. That's the thing to understand before you start. The palette stays tight, and the whole painting is carried by how gold and pale blue sit against that darkness.

24 colors is enough here. The sky is built from stroke direction rather than tone — spirals, ribbons, short curved marks — so what you're really painting is movement. The 36-color version splits the blues further and gives the water and the rock face more gradual depth, if you want the sky to shift more slowly from mark to mark.

Plan on a long stretch of work. The spirals are made of many small shapes and the castle silhouette holds fine detail in the towers and roofline, so this is a paint by numbers project for someone who wants weeks with it rather than a weekend.

Framed and hung, it goes dark and rich from a distance and only shows its brushwork up close.

24 or 36 colors — which version?

It's simply how many different shades the design is painted with. The 24-color version has a clean, classic look and is a little easier to paint. The 36-color version adds extra shades for smoother blending and a more realistic finish. Both come with all the paint you need to complete your canvas — the number is about shades, not how much paint.
