Monet Sunset on the Seine at Lavacourt

A burnt-orange sun sinks dead center over the frozen Seine, its reflection trailing down the water in broken columns of red. Monet painted this in 1880 from Vétheuil, looking across at Lavacourt during a brutal winter thaw — one of a series he braved the cold to work on.

The whole canvas runs on one contrast: the warm pink-orange sky and sun against the icy blues and mauves of the misty village and water. The upper sky is soft, fluid haze; the banks and river carry thicker, choppier strokes and the sun's reflection.

Middle-ground difficulty. The large sky and water read as broad tonal washes you can build steadily, while the reflected light, the reed-covered banks, and the tiny fishing boats hold the fiddly detail.

The pink-and-blue winter palette is quiet and atmospheric rather than bright — suits a bedroom, study, or any calm space.
