The original woodblock print from around 1831 is monochrome blue on cream. This version keeps the composition — the curling crest, the claw-like foam, Mount Fuji small in the distance — and adds sakura branches across the top right and blossoms scattered through the water.

That combination makes it a more decorative piece than the original, and easier to place. A bedroom, a bathroom, a room with pale walls. It reads as Japanese art without the austerity.

The work is in the foam. Curls within curls within curls, each one outlined and flat-filled, and it's the section people settle into for hours.

The 24-color version keeps the design graphic with strong contrast between the navy and the white.
