The Kiss

Gustav Klimt painted this between 1907 and 1908, at the height of his golden period. The original hangs in the Belvedere in Vienna, and it is probably the most reproduced image in Austrian art.

Two figures wrapped in a single gold cloak: his robe made of black and white rectangles, hers of circles and flowers. He holds her face, she has her eyes closed, and the whole embrace sits on a field of ochre.

This is a version to paint rather than a print to hang, and that difference matters to the person buying it. Working through Klimt's patterns by hand — the rectangles, the spirals, the small clusters of petals — is a different relationship with the picture than owning a poster of it.

Expect a long project. The gold occupies most of the canvas and is broken into hundreds of separate ornamental shapes.
