Two lemons on a board against a yellow wall. That's the entire painting, and it's the reason it works.

Kitchen art rarely needs a story. This one gives a room a warm block of color and a subject that belongs there, which is why it also lands well as a housewarming gift when you don't know someone's taste.

The painting itself is unusual for a still life. Roughly half the canvas is a plain yellow wall, and it goes down in wide comfortable areas with only slight shifts across it. The wooden board underneath is much the same: long horizontal grain, broad strokes, nothing fiddly.

Then there's the cut face of the lemon, and that's where you settle in. Segment walls, pale membranes, the ring of pith around the outside and a handful of seeds at the center — small shapes packed into one circle, and the most rewarding twenty minutes of the canvas.

The 24-color version turns it into a bolder, flatter still life with the yellows simplified into clearer blocks. This design asks for 36 because it's built almost entirely from one color. The wall alone moves through several yellows from lit corner to shaded edge, the peel is textured with dozens of small darker pits, and the wood runs from pale bleached grain to deep brown at the front edge. Those close values are what make the lemons sit on the table instead of floating on it.
