Painting it is unusually structured. Twenty-odd records, each a disc of black or color with a label at the center and a ring of fine grooves around it. You paint them one at a time and watch the crown build outward, which makes it easy to stop and pick up again without losing your place.

The rest of the canvas is generous. Flat sage green fills most of the background, the lettering is bold and solid, and her shoulders and the yellow wrap go down in broad areas. The face and hand are the only places that ask for a careful touch.

The 24-color version keeps the retro palette tight and the records reading as strong flat discs, which is close to how the artwork is drawn. Thirty-six earns its place in three specific spots: the record faces carry a sheen that runs from near-black through charcoal to a green or amber glint depending on the angle, her skin is modeled with warm mid-browns across the shoulders and collarbone, and the yellow fabric shifts through several values in its folds.
