The painting gives you room to breathe. The wall takes up a large share of the canvas and is worked in loose blocks of blue, cream and buttery sunlight, the kind of area you fill while half-listening to something else. The window frame and the box below are wide bands of warm brown with strong shadow lines.

The flowers are the opposite and there are a great many of them. Petunias, daisies, marigolds and trailing ivy layered several deep, each bloom a small cluster of numbered petals. Plan a few evenings for that band across the middle.

The 24-color version simplifies the flowers into bolder blocks and pushes the whole thing toward a brighter, more graphic look. Thirty-six suits what's here better. The wall is painted in dappled sunlight with several blues and creams overlapping, the flowers carry three or four values inside a single bloom, and the greenery ranges from lit yellow-green at the front to deep shadow underneath the box.
