Fantasy art tends to end up in a specific room — a den, a study, a games room, a teenager's wall — and it's one of the easier subjects to buy for someone else, because the person who wants it usually wants it badly.

The painting has two halves. The background is deep blue and black scattered with hundreds of small stars and embers, which is slow but undemanding work you can do in front of the television. The wizard is the opposite: his beard is drawn as individual lit strands, the face is heavily lined, and the hands holding the book are worked in warm modeling from knuckle to knuckle.

Save the glowing pages for last. They're the smallest area and the thing that makes the rest work.

At 24 colors the piece becomes more stylized and graphic, with the starfield simplified and the contrast between robe and night pushed harder. This design is built for 36 though. Nearly everything in it is lit from a single golden source: the beard runs from white through cream to amber where the page catches it, the robe carries blue, violet, magenta and red in the same fold, and the night sky needs its full spread of blues to stay deep rather than flat.
